Street Dog Dreams: Lodhi Gardens

Neelanjana Banerjee
Vol. 87 Issue 3

all night
she dreams of gold jewelry
burying her alive
and fine fine silks
that smell so sharply of fear
her teeth ache

then when the humans come
clattering their feet
in the yellow squares of light
their breath heavy with desire
and sweet smoke

she wants to tell them
who she was
but the man whistles so loudly
she forgets everything
and barks at the moon
