The Fall and Winter 2025 issues are now available!

Fall 2025, the Desire issue, opens with an essay by Cynthia Carr reflecting on the issue’s cover image, Candy Darling on Her Deathbed (by Peter Hujar, courtesy of The Peter Hujar Archive / Artists Rights Society). Elsewhere in the issue, Sharon Olds takes us on a crowded bus ride in “Sex in Public”; Ted Kooser has us climb into the trunk of a friend’s red and white `39 Chevy with him in “The Fabulous“; Alissa Nutting brings us with her to a clown cardio exercise class. In an “On the Archive” feature, editor in chief Timothy Schaffert reflects on the love affair(s) of Tennessee Williams and Oliver Evans. The issue ends with a portfolio on New Trans Writing, edited by Teo Rivera-Dundas and Timothy Schaffert, and featuring work by Jai Dulani, Apollo Chastain, Joan Tate, Ell Peck, and more. Contributors to the issue also include Terese Marie Mailhot, Leslie Zemeckis, Ilana Masad, Thomas Kneeland, and Mag Gabbert, among many others.

The Winter 2025 issue features a portfolio on The Long Short Story, with stories by Priyam Goel, Micah Dean Hicks, Kate Shannon Jenkins, Dominic Russ-Combs, and Eric C. Wat. Assistant Fiction Editor Kasey Peters, in a preface to the portfolio, writes “Rather than disparage the normalization of shorter short stories, I want to say simply that my love of the longer short story is a positive love. It is a desire for connection with the writer, for trust. It is the love of texture, of depth, of cosmically expanding nuance. It is that pure feeling of surrender I love. The way the small world becomes the whole world.” The Winter issue also includes Brad Bigelow reflecting on Virginia Faulkner for “On the Archive,” as well as poetry by Virginia Kane, Hilda Raz, Lolita Stewart-White, and more.
