An Act
Designate the body with a poppy in his mouth.
The penalty eschewed from the civilian’s tongue
and kept on the politician’s smooth veneers.
His mouth opens and smoke, wind, or quiet.
For example, the escalation of police presence
the same week a man in a garden gardens peonies.
I will begin with an admission: I have no authority,
I was walking, it was Spring, and you got me.
Here, a list of prohibited acts
composed with care: a soft whistle down a tunnel,
a fist deep in a fissure of earth,
a man wondering what happens in a country,
a country not wondering what happens to man
without his country.
