Since 1926, our journal has supported established and emerging writers from around the world. We are proud of the journal’s breadth of voice and vision. At once international and regional, the Schooner is varied in its sensibility, consistent in offering compelling literature. The Schooner has presented work by Pulitzer Prize winners, Nobel laureates, National Endowment for the Arts recipients, and MacArthur and Guggenheim fellows. Work first published in the Schooner has been reprinted or cited in the Pushcart Prize and O. Henry Prize volumes, Best American Essays, Best American Short Stories, and other anthologies. 

We are committed to amplifying voices who inspire discovery, introspection, and social action. Put simply, our goal is to publish literature that matters.

Through donations from individuals like you, we can ensure the Schooner remains an accessible, inclusive publication. Our commitments include:

  • Offering no fee submissions to all writers during our open reading window
  • Awarding significant cash prizes to contributing authors throughout the year
  • Sponsoring the yearly Raz-Shumaker Book Prizes in poetry and fiction, which award $3,000 and publication with the University of Nebraska Press and which have helped launch the careers of outstanding authors like Safiya Sinclair and Aria Aber
  • Sponsoring the annual Creative Nonfiction Summer Essay Contest which awards $1,000 and publication to one essay
  • Keeping subscriptions affordable at $32 per four issues, with a reduced rate of $28 for students
