Hy-Brazil

Sandra Bunting
From Prairie Schooner, Vol. 85, No. 4 (Winter 2011)

The island glitters
in the middle of the ocean,
an arcane city
built on a living form
submerged at the deepest
part of the Atlantic,
a green star flickering,
only to vanish and reappear
somewhere else.

I have seen
its other side
—the dark side.
It moves along the ocean bed,
occasionally
coming up for air.

When you are pregnant,
so is every other woman
you see, or so it seems.
When someone you love
is afflicted, you see pain
everywhere.

Hy-Brazil is an island in Irish mythology
that appears and disappears.
